And the Light Came Down

I can't really say I wrote this script, because it all comes from God's Word!

But, I did put it all together and pictured the way the acting would take place behind the white drop. My husband was a great help at figuring out the lighting, so that the silhoettes showed perfectly. We used a few props--I remember us making a cardboard tree with an apple. Someone stood behind the tree with their hand in a sock, to make the shadow for the Serpent speaking.

The students narrating were off stage, so their voices were heard, but they were not seen.

I'm still hoping I can find our video of the students acting this out. I really loved the way it turned out!

ACT ONE: Creation of Light, Fall of Man

(The auditorium is completely black. Music begins, 1st song)

GUY: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

GIRL: Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

GUY: And God said, Let there be light (light comes on slowly behind screen) and there was light.

GIRL: God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.

GUY: And on the sixth day, the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, (a man appears) and the man became a living being.

GIRL: And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die.” (a tree appears)

GUY: The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (a woman appears. Happy music. They walk hand in hand, then they come to the tree and look at it)

GIRL: Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman,

GUY: "Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden?””

GIRL: The woman said to the serpent. We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, “You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.”

GUY: “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

GIRL: When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (All the light goes out. 2nd song, Music is dark and sad.)

GUY: Sin entered the world.

GIRL: And all mankind was darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that was in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

ACT TWO: Sin causes Darkness and Separation, but Jesus Comes to Bring Light (as the narration begin, light begins to come back on behind the screen)

GUY: And, then, the true light that gives light to every man came into the world.

GIRL: This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother, Mary, was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man (see Joseph come on stage) and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

GUY: But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him(angel is seen talking to Joseph) in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

GIRL: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. (3rd song, Joyous music. Mary appears with the baby) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace.

GUY: Now, there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. (Simeon on one side) It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.

GIRL: When the parents (Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to Simeon) brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

GUY: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people, Israel.

GIRL: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. (Mary and Joseph take Jesus off stage. 4th song, Music changes to sad and dark, lights are out) Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

ACT THREE: They Crucify the Light, but He Rises Again.

GUY: (lights on) When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him (group crucifying Jesus) along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

GIRL: And they divided his clothes by casting lots. The people stood watching and the rulers even sneered at him. They said,

GUY: “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

GIRL: One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him.

GUY: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

GIRL: But the other criminal rebuked him,

GUY: Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But his man has done nothing wrong. Then he said, Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom.

GIRL: Jesus answered him, I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise. (5th song, sad)

GUY: IT was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour (it begins to get darker) for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

GIRL: Jesus called out in a loud voice,

GUY: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."

GIRL: When he had said this, he breathed his last.

GUY: (lights again) On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

GIRL: While they were wondering about this, suddenly, an angel stood beside them. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground. And the angel spoke to them.

GUY: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? (6th song, happy) He is not here, he has risen!”

GIRL: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

GUY: so that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
